Biographical / Historical

In 1955, a Middle States Association accrediting team suggested the need to reorganize the college’s administrative structure under an academic vice president. In November 1957 Father Joseph Drane, the incumbent dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, was appointed Loyola’s first Academic Vice President. After Father Drane’s successor, Father Aloysius Galvin, departed in 1965, the position was left unfilled until the summer of 1967, when Father William G. Kelly was appointed “to oversee Loyola’s general academic affairs.” Stephen McNierney succeeded Father Kelly and served from 1969 to 1977. For two years (1974-76) the Loyola College catalogues list McNierney’s position as Executive Vice President, although there is no apparent change in his responsibilities. His successor, Father Daniel Degnan, took the previous title of Academic Vice President. Father Degnan served only one year and was succeeded by Thomas Scheye, a faculty member in the English Department. As of January 1, 1986, Scheye’s title became Provost and Academic Vice President. After Scheye’s departure “Provost” was dropped from the position title. In about 2000, when David Haddad was the Academic Vice President, the position was renamed Vice President for Academic Affairs. As of September 2018, the title of the position is Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Amanda Thomas serves in this position.
