Abstract

The Cardinal Shehan fifty-year anniversary supplement to The Catholic Review, 1972, consists of a series of articles and advertisements celebrating Cardinal Shehan's 50th anniversary as a priest in the Catholic Church. Lawrence Joseph Shehan was made a cardinal in 1965 and served in Baltimore until his retirement in 1974. Cardinal Shehan celebrated his golden jubilee on December 23, 1972.

On each page is the calendar for that month along with a description of the drawing and its connection to the saint. Saint Francis of Assisi was born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone in Italy in late 1181 or early 1182 to an Italian father and a French mother. He gave up his life of luxury in 1205 to devote himself to spreading the gospel of penance and peace in Italy...

Abstract This collection consists of a single black and white lithographic print of Directions, numbered #10, by Carl Hoeckner, undated. Title in lower left hand corner of print, #10 in center, and signature in lower right hand corner all written in pencil. Carl Hoeckner was born in Munich in 1883 and immigrated to Chicago in 1910. In his lithographs from the 1930s, Hoeckner’s talents as a printmaker and his activism coalesced to produce “social documents”...

The Intaglio prints of outdoor scenes collection consists of two prints created with etching, aquatint, and hand coloring. The first, titled "Vannes 'Au Petit Pot,'" depicts several buildings in Vannes, France in the evening as a person walks beside them carrying a basket. The second, titled "Le Ruitscoud(?) en Hiver," depicts a person in red standing near a river in pale winter light.
