Biographical / Historical
The September 11th terrorist attacks took place on September 11, 2001 in New York City, Arlington, Virginia and Shanksville, Pennsylvania when nineteen men hijacked four airplanes leaving from Boston Logan Airport, Washington Dulles International Airport, and Newark Liberty International Airport. American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the World Trade Center's North and South towers in New York City at 8:46 am and 9:03 am, respectively. The South tower collapsed at 9:56 am and the North tower collapsed at 10:28 am. Additional World Trade Center buildings collapsed throughout the day because of damage from the North and South towers.
American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the west side of the Pentagon building in Arlington, Virginia at 9:37 am causing the facade to collapse. United Airlines Flight 93, headed to either the White House or the U.S. Capitol, crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania when passengers decided to fight back against the hijackers. Approximately 3,000 people lost their lives that day. The attacks led to the War on Terror in the Middle East and increased security tactics at airports. September 11th is commemorated each year at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the Shanksville, Pennsylvania site.
