Biographical / Historical

The Office of International Programs in its mission statement states that it “is committed to strengthening Loyola University Maryland’s Jesuit mission of development of the whole person through supporting a diverse offering of global opportunities.” It “strives to serve this mission through its broad offering of study abroad opportunities and its persistent support of international activities on campus.”

On Loyola’s campus it “aims to promote a more diverse and international climate to our students…who are unable to travel or study in a foreign country.” Its philosophy is “to provide students with an in-depth experience of another culture by focusing on one program.” The Office must approve any international program that a Loyola student wishes to obtain credit from while enrolled at Loyola.

Loyola has offered study abroad opportunities for many years. The first mention of a Director of International Programs is in the 1995-96 catalog and the first mention of the Office of International Programs is in the 2001-2002 catalog.

At present (2023) the Dean of International Programs is Jack Hobson and the Director of International Student Services is Sunanda Bhatia.
