Biographical / Historical

WLOY Loyola Radio is the student-run radio station operating at Loyola University Maryland. WLOY provides entertainment through radio programming and campus/community events, offers a diverse creative and educational environment for individuals to have hands-on experience in broadcast radio, and is committed to integrating itself into the greater Baltimore community through programming, events and outreach. Through all these endeavors, WLOY livesout the Jesuit ideal of men and women with and for others.

WLOY followsa general rock music format, playing contemporary, alternative, and classic rock. On-air staff, comprised almost exclusively of students, were given latitude to select songs within this format.

Specialty shows have included a program focusing on local music and featuring live performances by artists; a financial advice show featuring discussions with guests on matters of financial planning; and Shut Up, I’m on the Radio, which was awarded “Best Local Music Radio Show” in 2006 by the Baltimore City Paper. The station has also broadcasted live coverage of Loyola Greyhounds NCAA Division I sporting events.

The Loyola campus radio station was originally founded as WVLC in 1975 and switched to WLCR in 1976. WLOY went live March 19, 2003.

WLOY was a founding member of the Baltimore Community Radio Coalition and carried programming produced by underrepresented communities within Baltimore City. As a member, WLOY contributed equipment, installation, and training to the program in Dallas F. Nicholas Sr. Elementary School, among others. Material produced by Learning, Inc. and students at Dallas Nicholas aired Saturdays at noon and Sundays at 2pm as part of the community radio hour.

WLOY also was a member of the Collegiate Broadcasters, Inc. and the Broadcast Education Association.
