Biographical / Historical

The Classics Academy, also known as The Loyola Classics Academy, was founded in 1931. Its purpose was to deepen and extend knowledge of the writers and institutions of classical antiquity. The Classics Academy was originally founded as an undergraduate academy in December 1929, under the name of The Vergil Academy. After two years, The Vergil Academy broadened its scope and changed its name to The Loyola Classics Academy.

Meetings included one of the members reading a paper on classical antiquity and then answering questions, or all members reading about a common subject before the meeting and having an informal discussion at the meeting. Additional activities included organizing lecture sessions.
