Biographical / Historical

Marie Adele Baldwin (born May 28, 1881) was a church organist living in Baltimore who was deployed to France as a civilian entertainment worker in 1919 with the YMCA’s Georgia Star unit for World War I-era service. Baldwin served under the National War Work Council and later held the role of Vice leadership in postwar women's veterans' networks.

As a middle-class white American woman, Baldwin engaged in morale-building labor in France with a focus on supporting blind soldiers. From this Baldwin experienced auxiliary war work in post-Armistice France, gaining a rich insight into gender, patriotism, and civilian service in the wake of World War I.
