Biographical / Historical
The Student Education Association (SEA) was formerly known as Future Teachers of America (FTA), which began its charter at College of Notre Dame of Maryland on March 27, 1942. FTA became SEA in approximately 1961. Both the SEA and the FTA were College of Notre Dame of Maryland chapters of a parent organization at the state level. According to undated bylaws of the Maryland State Education Association (MSEA), the one of the purposes of MSEA was “to develop among college students preparing to be educators an understanding of the teaching profession through participation in professional activities and study of the history, ethics, organizations, policies, and programs of the local, state, and national education associations.” Annual Tea was a notable event organized by both FTA and SEA.
