Biographical / Historical

In the 1940s, the Notre Dame Athletic Association changed its name to Recreation Association (RA). An amended Recreation Association constitution, dated 1955-56, stated RA’s purpose: “to further the aims of the College of Notre Dame of Maryland, which are the mental, moral, and physical education of the individual; to develop good sportsmanship and leadership; to promote student participation in and enjoyment of sports; to stimulate health consciousness; to encourage all activities having a healthful, recreational, or leadership value.” Membership was voluntary; governance was by five executive officers.

In 1980, RA’s name was changed to Recreation Organization (RO). According to an October 6, 1988 Columns article, RO distinguished between recreational (one-time) events and intramural (over a defined period of time) events, and offered both types. According to a Columns article of October 11, 1990, RO changed its name to Intra-Act, also known as Intramural Activities, in the summer of 1989. Despite its name, Intra-Act continued RO’s function of hosting one-time recreational events, such as a student-faculty softball game.
