Biographical / Historical

Michael J. Dwyer was fifty-four years old when he began his studies for the priesthood a few years after the death of his wife. He had been a frequent visitor to the church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Roxbury, Massachusetts and had friends among the Redemptorist priests there. This quotation from St. Clement, CSSR was on his ordination card: "What God wills, because God wills it; as long as God wills it."

Father Dwyer had been a practicing lawyer in Suffolk County, Boston, and a tenor singer with the Boston Opera Company. He had a daughter, Frances Dwyer, who had been a freshman at Notre Dame, 1910-11, and was called home at the death of her mother. Father Dwyer was first ordained in Rome in 1918. He served at a parish in Watervliette, New York. Later he became pastor of St. Ambrose Church in Latham, New York where his funeral Mass was offered. He served as a priest for twenty years.
