Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Notre Dame of Maryland University artwork collection, 1850-2018, contains photographs, works on paper, paintings, and mixed media. Works in the collection were created by School Sisters of Notre Dame, lay faculty, and local and internationally renowned artists. Some works in the collection have also been presented as gifts to individuals associated with Notre Dame of Maryland University.

Photographs include color and black and white portraits of Cardinal James Gibbons and Flannery O'Connor.

Works on paper include ink, graphite, and oil pastel drawings, sketches for larger works, and prints. Many illustrate scenes of Baltimore's Inner Harbor, landscapes, and Notre Dame of Maryland University buildings. Religious themes are present throughout.

Paintings include acrylic, water color, and oil paintings of similar subjects. Still lives are also prevalent. Notable works include Sister John de Matha's and Sister M. Noreen Gormley's paintings of religious scenes in a variety of styles akin to Fauvism and Expressionism.

Mixed media includes one stitched fabric work. There are matted, unmatted, and framed works in the collection.

32.4 cm x 36.8 cm (12.75"x14.5") engraving, etching, and aquatint intaglio print (frame included). Framed to be hung horizontally.
