Biographical / Historical
The John Gilmary Shea History Academy, also known as the John Gilmary Shea Academy of History, was founded in 1927 by Edward Ryan, S.J., a professor of history at Loyola College. The organization was named in honor of John Gilmary Shea, a historian considered the father of American Catholic history. According to the organization's constitution, adopted in December 1927, "the object of this Association shall be to promote study and research in the field of history," and membership was restricted to upperclassmen and post-graduate students.
