This collection is open for research, with the exception of the Memoirs series. This series is closed to the public until January 2055. Researchers may request access to this series for research purposes only and are restricted from publishing quotations from the memoirs in whole or in part.

Biographical / Historical

Nicholas Varga was born and raised in Elizabeth, New Jersey. He enlisted in the Army after high school and served as a heavy machine gunner in World War II. He spent two years recovering from wartime injuries, and received a Purple Heart, Bronze Star for valor, and Combat Infantry Badge for his service.

Varga received a bachelor's degree from Boston College in 1952, a master's degree in 1953, and a doctorate in history in 1960 from Fordham University.

Varga was a member of Loyola University Maryland's History Department faculty from 1955 to 1992. He served as Loyola's first archivist from 1976 to his death in 2005. His book Baltimore's Loyola, Loyola's Baltimore, a detailed exploration of the university's history, was published in 1990.

Varga died January 18, 2005 at the age of 79. He was survived by his wife, the former Margaret Joan Skinner; sons Colin Peire Varga and Damien Guy Varga, daughter Deidre Krasnansky, and three grandsons.

Abstract

The Nicholas Varga papers, circa 1950-2005, document the life, career, and publications of Loyola history professor and archivist Nicholas Varga. Nicholas Varga (1925-2005) was a decorated Army veteran, archivist, and historian specializing in the history of Maryland and politics of colonial New York.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Materials in this collection were transferred to Archives and Special Collections by the History Department after Varga's death. Audiocassettes in the collection were donated by Nicholas Varga's son, Colin Varga, in August 2006.

Processing Information

This collection was processed in 2021 by Jenny Kinniff. As a consequence of Varga's work as the longtime archivist of Loyola University Maryland, his files included some original university records and correspondence from alumni that belong within other Loyola archival collections. These materials have been returned to the originating office's records or other appropriate collection whenever possible.
