Biographical / Historical
Loyola’s admissions responsibilities have considerably evolved and enlarged as the college has grown from a small men’s school to a mid-sized university. The first Loyola catalog that lists a Director of Admissions is 1956-57: Fr. James F. Dougherty, who was also an assistant professor of philosophy and served on a four-person Committee on Admissions (earlier the Board of Admissions). In earlier catalogs the only position listed that relates to admissions is that of Registrar. In 1957-58 Fr. Dougherty’s position is listed as Director of Admissions and Placement Services. The following year Fr. George S. Smardon became the Director of Admissions, Placement and Testing. In 1959-60 Fr. Smardon’s title became simply Director of Admissions.
Presently (2020) at Loyola Eric Nichols is the Vice President for Enrollment Management, and oversees both undergraduate and graduate admissions. The Dean of Undergraduate Admissions is Jennifer Louden.
