Biographical / Historical

James Monroe was born April 28, 1758 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He fought in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War then pursued a law career. Monroe was an Anti-Federalist delegate in the Virginia Convention to ratify the U.S. Constitution and became a U.S. Senator in 1790. He was the Minister to France in 1794-1796 where he developed compassion towards the French that helped with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. He was elected Governor of Virginia in 1799 and 1811. His second term as governor was cut short by his appointment as Secretary of State to President Madison. Monroe was elected the 5th President of the United States in 1816 and 1820. He established the Monroe Doctrine in December 1823 to discourage recolonization of former European occupied countries. James Monroe died on July 4, 1831 in New York City.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Donated by Joseph Jenkins Lee in November 1942 to Sister Mary Frances Smith, President of Notre Dame College. Mr. Lee sent the signed check to thank Sister Mary Frances for showing Lee and his wife around the library building.
