Biographical / Historical
William McKinley was born January 29, 1843 in Niles, Ohio. He served as a Union soldier in the American Civil War from 1861-1865. McKinley established a law career after the war and successfully ran for U.S. Congress in 1875. He served fourteen years in Congress before being elected Governor of Ohio in 1891. McKinley became the 25th President of the United States on March 4, 1897 and won reelection in November 1900. He was inaugurated a second time on March 4, 1901. On September 6, 1901, McKinley was shot twice by an unemployed mill worker named Leon Czolgosz in Buffalo, New York. He died eight days later on September 14, 1901.
