Biographical / Historical

Phi Alpha Theta (PAT) is an American honor society for undergraduate and graduate students and professors of history. PAT was established on March 17, 1921 at the University of Arkansas. Under the leadership of Professor Charles Ritter, Notre Dame established the Nu Pi chapter of PAT in 1968.

The mission of the society is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. To qualify for membership undergraduate students must have taken four courses in history with a 3.1 GPA, and have a 3.0 GPA overall.

Notre Dame’s chapter of PAT hosted the Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference in 1987, 1996, and 2010. At these conferences numerous papers were presented by students from member institutions.
